The inaugural Bay Area Global Health Innovation Challenge is funded by HealthRoots Foundation for Global Health, in partnership with UC Berkeley Center for Global Public Health, the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health and the Consortium of Universities in Global Health.
About the Challenge
Do you have an innovative solution that has the potential to improve health and save lives in a low-resource setting? Submit your idea to the 2016 Bay Area Global Health Innovation Challenge for the chance to win $10,000 in seed capital, as well as mentorship from a group of advisors drawn from the Bay Area academic, business and nonprofit community.
The Challenge is a two-part competition taking place April 8th and 9th, 2016 in San Francisco, California.
· Ten teams will be invited to pitch their idea to an influential panel of judges at the semifinals showcase held this year at UC Berkeley on April 8, 2016. Three finalist teams will be selected.
· The three finalist teams will advance to the Global Health Innovation Challenge Finals taking place on center stage on April 9th at the 2016 Consortium of Universities in Global Health (CUGH) Annual Conference. Finalist teams will pitch to a high-profile panel of judges from biodesign, technology, global health and development, and venture capital sectors. The winner will be announced at the event.
**Submissions will be accepted November 1, 2015 – February 1, 2016**
· The team must be comprised of currently enrolled university students. Students of all disciplines and stages in their training are welcome including undergraduate, graduate, resident, and postdoctoral students. Individuals holding a faculty appointment will not qualify.
· There is no limit to team size, although please note that if your team is selected, presentations will be restricted to no more than 3 people.
· There are no geographical boundaries. Any university student in any country may compete.
· The “innovation” must be student-driven. Although we encourage that students draw on faculty and outside mentorship and support, it should not be the work/research output of a faculty member.
JUDGING / EVALUATION CRITERIA
Your global health innovation, or “product”, should be a low-cost, high-impact solution that addresses a global health challenge in a low or middle-income country. The innovation can be in the form of a product, service, systems-level improvement or new use of an existing tool. Winning ideas will be those that are easily implemented, scalable, and can greatly impact human health and wellbeing. Additional points will be awarded to interdisciplinary teams whose complementary skillsets enable them to better understand and address their identified global health challenge. Submissions will be judged on the following criteria:
Innovation: What is the innovation and what does it aim to achieve?
Impact: Who will benefit and what is the expected health impact?
Accountability: How will you evaluate successful uptake of your idea? What data or metrics will be used to monitor implementation?
Feasibility: What will it take to get your idea off the ground?
Sustainability: Is your idea sustainable over the long-term? Will it work in the field, and is it welcomed in the populations it seeks to serve?
Affordability & Investment Potential: How much funding will be required? How will you utilize the $10,000 prize?
Interdisciplinary: Do you have the appropriate skill set to make your innovation a reality? If not, where will you find this expertise?
· The winning team will receive the $10,000 HealthRoots grand prize in seed funding that must be used to invest in the innovation. A 6-month and 1 year progress update will be expected in order to get funding.
· The winning team will also be offered mentorship from a group of global health advisors in the academic, business and nonprofit communities.
· Presenters in the three finalist teams will receive subsidized registration for the 2016 CUGH conference.
· All semi-finalist teams will have the opportunity to receive feedback and potential mentorship from an influential judging panel of leading global health professionals and venture capitalists.
· Scholarships and funding support for semifinalist and finalist teams to attend the CUGH annual conference may be available.

· A pitch video OR a powerpoint “pitch deck” describing the innovation.
o For video: provide a link to your pitch video on youtube or vimeo (no more than 5 min)
o For powerpoint: provide a file or link to your presentation (no more than 10 slides)
2. Team information
· Name of a lead team member to serve as competition lead contact
· For each team member please provide: Full name, email address, phone number, affiliated department and institution, and academic status as of April 2016 (e.g. undergraduate, second year medical, graduate or PhD student, PGY3, etc.)
· A title and brief description about the global health innovation (500 words maximum)
